Williams Wall appeal

Ultimately, free agent defensive ends want to get paid. But they also want to produce, and no club offers a better opportunity to do that than Minnesota. With Pro Bowl tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams inside, the outside pass rushers will mostly face one-on-ones. One elite pass rusher could be the final key piece to the Vikings' defense asserting itself as one of the league's best.

As the New York Giants showed, a potent four-man pass rush covers up holes in the secondary and empowers a defense to try a lot of different things.

The Vikings are believed to be considering Bobby McCray, Antwan Odom and Justin Smith. All three are versatile enough to play on both sides and effectively defend the run and pass. But, again, with the Williams Wall around, they probably can focus more on rushing the passer.

Given the need, the Vikings will pay handsomely, and they provide the best chance to put up big numbers.

On an aside, the Philadelphia Eagles just released DE Jevon Kearse.

The Freak isn't what he once was. But, if he can get healthy again, he still could give some quality snaps and pick up some quality sacks.

S Dwight Smith will now get a chance to face the Vikings twice a year.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that Smith signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Lions.

The deal includes a $350,000 signing bonus.

Holcomb officially cut

The Vikings announced the release of veteran QB Kelly Holcomb.

Meanwhile, Vikings LB Heath Farwell received the second-round tender, which is worth $1.4 million next season. With LB Dontarrious Thomas expected to sign elsewhere, Farwell will likely be the top backup at two of the spots, and he will continue to anchor the team's improving special teams.

On an aside, sorry for the confusion on the blogs. We're going through a transition, but you can count on this, for the time being.

Thoughts on Williamson trade

Troy Williamson as a Viking clearly was a disappointment for all parties involved. Williamson could lament that he never had a great quarterback to work with, and the Vikings could lament all the dropped passes.

But a fresh start may serve everyone involved.

Ultimately, after the team docked his pay in November, Williamson's days in Minnesota were numbered. He was diplomatic in his comments, but he clearly felt betrayed by the organization for not showing sensitivity toward him during a patch with his family.

The Vikings, meanwhile, tried to be patient with Williamson, after a disappointing 2006 season, by empowering him during the 2007 offseason. They hired a new receivers coach, George Stewart, who had a reputation for working well with young players. Stewart worked with Williamson on fundamentals, and he accompanied him on his trip to the Nike headquarters, to meet with vision specialists.

Williamson looked strong during mini-camps and even in training camp, but he once again disappeared during the regular season, never catching more than three passes in a single game.

Williamson isn't a natural at catching passes. But his speed should help him create enough room to make the routine catches.

The Vikings often sent him deep, but he could have been better served on slants and comebacks.

Williamson may never live up to his seventh overall selection. But he could become a dependable player in Jacksonville, where he'll be motivated to prove he's not an all-time bust. He'll work in a stable offense, loaded with a talented backfield and with an up-and-coming quarterback (David Garrard).

There will also be some familiar faces, most notably assistant head coach Mike Tice.

Over the weekend, the Vikings were believed to be seeking a veteran for Williamson, or a second-round pick. But, instead, the Vikings had to settle for a sixth-round pick.

Williamson expected to be dealt to the Jaguars

The Vikings have agreed in principle on a deal that would send receiver Troy Williamson to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a second-day pick, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The trade cannot become official, however, until the start of the league year Thursday at 11 p.m. CST.

The Vikings gave agent David Canter permission to seek a trade last week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, and he insisted there was plenty of interest in Williamson, the seventh overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. Despite a disappointing 79 catches for 1,067 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons, Williamson still intrigues NFL teams because of his exceptional speed.

The Vikings had high hopes for Williamson heading into the 2007 season, after he spent time in the offseason working with vision specialists at the Nike headquarters. But Williamson once again struggled with drops, but he had a career-low 18 catches for 240 yards.

Childress gathering more information on McKinnie

Vikings coach Brad Childress briefly addressed Bryant McKinnie's arrest with reporters at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Not surprisingly, though, Childress didn't have much to say about the matter.

"I don’t have all the information because I’ve been in meetings and workouts all weekend, but I have gotten a chance to speak with his family,” Childress said, according to the Associated Press.

Asked if he's made a decision, Childress said, "No.

"We don't have all the information, so how could you make a decision?"

Given past transgressions, though, McKinnie likely will face discipline from the NFL, as well as the Vikings, who have focused on creating a culture of accountability at Winter Park.

Former Vikings land in Jacksonville

Former Viking players Todd Bouman and Richard Angulo have signed contracts with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Naturally, both players are familiar with Jaguars assistant head coach Mike Tice. Bouman, who starred at St. Cloud State, was with the Vikings from 1997 to 2002, while Angulo was a tight end project of Tice's from 2003 to 2005.

Angulo played in five games for the Jaguars last season, catching eight passes for 81 yards, including one touchdown.

Bouman has played in 42 games, with six starts, and he served as a backup in Jacksonville last season, although he never played. His last appearance came in 2005, when he was with the New Orleans Saints.

Report: McKinnie arrested

The Miami Herald is reporting that Vikings offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie was arrested early Sunday morning after being involved in a large street brawl outside a Miami nightclub.

According to the report, McKinnie, 28, was thrown out of Club Space by a security guard after getting into an altercation with a bouncer.

McKinnie left the club but returned and began fighting with the man, at which point he was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence.

Aggravated battery is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and may carry a mandatory minimum sentence.

He was eventually released on bond.

A Vikings spokesman released the following statement: "We are aware of the situation with Bryant McKinnie. We will respond further once we have collected the appropriate information."

Status quo on Williamson

The agent for wide receiver Troy Williamson returned to Indianapolis today but had no news to report on a possible trade.

Agent David Canter has said he hopes to finalize a deal before the end of the NFL scouting combine Tuesday.

Coach Brad Childress, while not ruling out a quick trade, said Saturday that the Vikings are in no rush to complete a deal.

The Vikings have given Canter permission to try to shop Williamson, who has played three disappointing seasons for the team since being selected with the seventh pick of the 2005 NFL draft.

Childress: Trade not imminent

The Vikings have heard from a number of teams regarding a possible trade for wide receiver Troy Williamson, but coach Brad Childress said nothing is imminent.

"Not imminent, no," Childress said.

Williamson's agent, David Canter, said Friday that he hoped to complete a trade before the end of the NFL scouting combine Tuesday, but Childress wouldn't speculate on the chances of that happening.

"I don't have any way of knowing that," he said. "I don't know who specifically he's talked to exactly. I have ideas, but just because he's talked doesn't necessarily constitute a deal."

Canter was out of town today to attend a player's wedding but said Friday that he had heard from 9-12 teams that are interested in Williamson and that there had been trade discussions with "at least five teams."

Childress said there has been "nothing substantive" to this point.

Asked if the Vikings are in any rush to complete a trade by Tuesday, he said: "(We're) not. If that's the case, that's OK as well."

Childress did confirm Canter's statement that the Vikings have no plans to release Williamson. So any team waiting around for that to happen is in for a long wait.

"I have no motivation to release him, just like I have no motivation to release him right now," Childress said. "There's no sense in that."

Notes: The agent for safety Mike Doss said today that he definitely will hit the free-agent market and Childress confirmed it, calling it a mutual decision.

Except for a strong physical resemblance, Maryland linebacker Erin Henderson said he doesn't have much in common with his older brother E.J., the Vikings' starting middle linebacker.

"He's an introvert and I'm a little bit more of an extrovert," the younger Henderson said.

A broadcasting major, Henderson was asked how he would get his big brother to open up in an interview and agreed it wouldn't be easy.

"It took me about 15 years to get him to talk to me," he said.

Henderson is projected as a second-round draft choice.

Coach Brad Childress has confirmed that the Vikings have given the agent for wide receiver Troy Williamson permission to explore trade possibilities with other teams.

"It was a decision that we made as an organization," Childress said, adding that it was a "mutually agreeable situation" and agent David Canter "was happy to be able to have the latitude to do that."

Childress declined to put a time frame on a possible deal or to speculate on what the Vikings might able to get in return.

"You might be surprised," he said. "We'll see. I just know that all of a sudden, when (news) got out, I had three people grab me on the way out today. ... I wouldn't probably venture a guess."

Childress wouldn't say whether he preferred a draft choice or player for Williamson, the seventh overall selection of the 2005 draft, and wouldn't rule out him remaining with the Vikings if no team is willing to meet their price.

"We've allowed him to … go out and see what's out there," Childress said. "If it's something that's not satisfactory to us, then, like I said before, he's under contract to us."

Williamson on the trade block

The Vikings have given permission to the agent of receiver Troy Williamson to seek a trade, according to a source close to the situation.

The Vikings have been mum on Williamson's status since the season ended. But agent David Canter is believed to be shopping Williamson in Indianapolis at the NFL Combine.

Williamson, the seventh overall pick in the 2005 draft, has managed just 79 catches for 1,067 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons with the Vikings. There were high hopes for him heading into the 2007 season, but he again struggled with dropped passes, and his playing time dramatically decreased.

Although the Vikings are empowering a trade, the market for Williamson, who is signed through the 2009 season, may be minimal, and interested teams may wait for the Vikings to release him.

Cross Dallas safety Ken Hamlin off the list of possible candidates to fill Dwight Smith's former starting position with the Vikings.

The Cowboys today used their franchise tag on Hamlin, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent on Feb. 29.

With Hamlin out of the picture, Jacksonville's Sammy Knight and the New York Giants' Gibril Wilson are considered the top free-agent safeties and the Vikings might have an interest in Cincinnati's Madieu Williams.

Williams was a second-round draft choice of the Bengals in 2004, when Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier held the same position in Cincinnati.

Spielman-speak

In his second offseason with the Vikings, vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said today that the team remains committed to building through the draft. But with an expected $30 million in cap space, he said they also could be a bigger player in free agency.

"If there are some blue-chip type players out there, we'll try to do everything to take a swing at them if we can," he said. "Regardless of position."

Speaking to Twin Cities reporters on opening day of the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Spielman said the Vikings' first priority this week is to meet with agents for each of their nine unrestricted free agents.

That doesn't mean the team has or will make contract offers to all nine, but Spielman said the Vikings haven't closed the door on any of them.

"We never write anyone off," he said.

The Vikings released veteran safety Dwight Smith on Wednesday and Spielman said there could be some more roster moves before free agency opens Feb. 29.

He shed no light on the future of wide receiver Troy Williamson, who is under contract but could be headed elsewhere after three disappointing seasons.

"We're still in the talking process," Spielman said. "We have no comment on where he's going or what's going to happen to him right now. There's a lot of yet-to-be-determines."

Vikings release Smith

The stormy, two-year marriage between Dwight Smith and the Vikings came to a sudden end today when the team released the veteran safety.

"I appreciate his contributions the last couple of years," coach Brad Childress, in Indianapolis for today's start of the NFL scouting combine, said in a brief telephone interview. "It's just a matter of we're moving in a different direction."

Childress wouldn't elaborate on possible reasons for the move, but he said Smith was released at this time to give him and his agent an opportunity to try to hook on with another team in advance of the start of free agency, Feb. 29.

With Tank Williams and Mike Doss both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, starter Darren Sharper and rookie Eric Frampton are the only two safeties under contract, but Childress declined to say how the team might address the position in free agency and/or the draft.

"It's almost like every position," Childress said. "You have to carefully comb through the guys that are available. Hopefully, we'll be able to find someone."

Smith, 29, intercepted four passes in each of his two seasons with the Vikings, but he also was arrested twice: once in 2006 for indecent conduct with a woman in a stairwell outside a downtown Minneapolis nightclub and last season for obstructing traffic and marijuana possession outside a strip club.

The drug charge was dropped earlier this month.

Childress, asked how big a factor Smith's off-the-field problems played in the decision to release him, declined to answer.

"I don't want to cast any aspersions on him," Childress said. "We're just moving in a different direction and leave it at that."

Udeze reaction

Reaction continues to trickle in to reports that Vikings defensive end Kenechi Udeze has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with a case of leukemia.

Defensive tackle Spencer Johnson said he heard the news last week at the Pro Bowl, which he attended as a guest of defensive tackle Kevin Williams, and spoke Monday night to Udeze.

"He said the support has been great," Johnson said. "A couple people came by and visited him in the hospital. That helped me out. I was shocked when I found out. He said he'll be in the hospital for two months and have to get chemo."

Johnson said defensive line coach Karl Dunbar broke the news to Vikings players in Hawaii at a Pro Bowl party hosted by owner Zygi Wilf.

Johnson, who makes his offseason home in Houston, said he has had several phone conversations with Udeze and plans to visit him soon.

"He said he'll be all right," Johnson said. "It was a blow to him, but he's in good spirits."

Season-ticket prices announced

Coming off an 8-8 season that ended short of the playoffs, the Vikings have raised their ticket prices for 2008.

The team announced 11 pricing options today for 10-game season-ticket packages, from a high of $1,230 to a low of $99 (limited view).

That includes two exhibition games in addition to the eight regular-season contests.

The top ticket price represents a $70 increase from 2007, but the team said in a release that the overall average increase is 3 percent compared to a league average of 6.5 percent last season.

"Our main priorities were to maintain affordable options for our season-ticket holders," Vikings vice president of sales and marketing Steve LaCroix said, "while keeping price increases as low as possible."

The other pricing options, from most to least expensive, are $1,170, $1,030, $980, $760, $740, $690, $500, $400 and $250.

The Vikings have sold out 104 consecutive home games since the start of the 1998 season but needed financial assistance from their corporate partners to sell out four games last season: against Atlanta, San Diego, Oakland and Detroit.

The 2008 home schedule includes games against the past two Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants and Indianapolis, in addition to Atlanta, Carolina, Houston and NFC North opponents Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay.

Dates and times will be announced when the full NFL schedule is released in April.

Manning Monday

The morning after pulling off one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning met with the national media one last time in Phoenix to share his thoughts on Sunday's 17-14 win over the New England Patriots and pick up his Cadillac Escalade hybrid as the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Still a bit bleary following a night of celebrating, Manning said he got next to no sleep but seemed none the worse for wear.

"I finally got into my room, but I had to turn on the TV and watch some of the highlights again," he said. "When I finally made the commitment to try to get some sleep, I kind of sat there with my eyes wide open and replaying plays in my head. I'm just living on … I don't know what I'm going on right now. Just emotions and excitement from last night."

Headed back to New York for a Tuesday parade, Manning said he never doubted or lost confidence in himself, even during the bad times, such as a 41-17 November loss to the Vikings in which he had three interceptions returned for touchdowns.

"When you're not playing well and when you're losing games, they're looking at everything you do and dissect it," he said. "You know, my demeanor and how I am on the sideline and my personality. But I'm very comfortable in my own skin. I am the way I am and it wasn't going to change."

Asked who his choice for MVP would have been, Manning said he would have liked to give it to the whole team. But he made special mention of a Giants defense that held Tom Brady and the Patriots' record-setting offense to its lowest point total of the season.

"Our whole entire defense, that defensive front, the way they got after Tom Brady," he said. "The way they were able to get pressure on him. No one's been able to do that all year. The Giants' defensive staff and the way those guys played, they all deserve it."

Carter snub theories

Why wasn't former Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter selected as one of the players for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer?

According to some voters who were in the room Saturday, there were two main reasons:

1.) An aggressive, grass-roots lobbying effort on behalf of former Redskins wide receiver Art Monk, who made it on his eighth (and possibly final) try.

2.) An attitude that Carter, while worthy, wasn't a first-ballot Hall of Famer, as someone who put up great numbers but never played in a Super Bowl.

Like former Vikings guard Randall McDaniel, those voters said Carter is sure to get in eventually, perhaps as soon as next year.

Playing it safe

Zimmerman lone Viking to make Hall

The Vikings went 1-for-3 today as offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman was their only former player chosen for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Wide receiver Cris Carter and guard Randall McDaniel made the final 10 but were eliminated in the cutdown to five players.

Former Chiefs cornerback and Vikings defensive coordinator Emmitt Thomas made it as a senior committee nominee.

Zimmerman spent the first seven of his 12 NFL seasons with the Vikings, earning three Pro Bowl invitations.

Traded to Denver in 1993, he made the Pro Bowl four more times in five seasons with the Broncos and started at left tackle in their Super Bowl XXXII win over Green Bay.

Also selected for the induction Class of 2008 were: former Chargers and 49ers defensive end Fred Dean, former Redskins cornerback Darrell Green, former Redskins wide receiver Art Monk and former Patriots linebacker Andre Tippett.

Carter expected to get Hall call

Based on conversations with some voters here at Super Bowl XLII, the Vikings seem certain to add at least one former player to their Hall of Fame roster Saturday.

Wide receiver Cris Carter is considered one of two slam dunks to join the induction Class of 2008, along with former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green.

Of the Vikings' two other candidates, offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman is considered to have the next-best chance, with guard Randall McDaniel in the longshot category.

Carter, Zimmerman and McDaniel are three of 17 finalists for this year's Hall of Fame class, which will be announced Saturday afternoon.

More hardware for Adrian

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was named Diet Pepsi rookie of the year today in a vote of NFL fans.

This is just the latest honor for Peterson, who previously was named the Associated Press offensive rookie of the year and is one of seven Vikings headed to next week's Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

An emotional Peterson thanked his teammates, coaches and especially running backs coach Eric Bieniemy "for staying on my back and continuing to push me."

Peterson rushed for 1,341 yards during his first season with the Vikings, including a 224-yard performance at Chicago that he called "a breakthrough game."

He later set an NFL single-game rushing record with 296 yards against San Diego.

"It was a special day," he said. "It was a wonderful day and a day I'll always remember."

Asked how he plans to spend his free time in Hawaii, Peterson said: "Just really enjoy myself and maybe hula dance."

The only question that appeared to throw Peterson dealt with what he would do if he were in charge of the Vikings' draft. (After a brief delay, he said he would need time to sit back and evaluate things first and then make a decision.)

This year's other four finalists were wide receiver Dwayne Bowe (Chiefs), running back Marshawn Lynch (Bills), offensive tackle Joe Thomas (Browns) and linebacker Patrick Willis (49ers).

Taylor, Favre win FedEx awards

Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor and Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre were named this season's winners of the FedEx ground and air players of the year awards, respectively.

Taylor beat out Vikings rookie Adrian Peterson and San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson for the ground award.

New England's Tom Brady and Dallas' Tony Romo were the other finalists for the air award.

Favre, asked if he has made any decision about his future, said he hasn't yet and would discuss it with Packers coach Mike McCarthy in a couple of weeks when the team's coaching staff returns from the Pro Bowl.

Tim Brewster suffered through a 1-11 season in his first season at the University of Minnesota, but former Gophers running back Laurence Maroney said he sees better days ahead.

"It was a tough first year," Maroney said in Phoenix, where he and the New England Patriots are preparing for Super Bowl XLII. "Introducing a new offense to an offense of (Glen) Mason's, which was a zone-run scheme or nothing but run and trying to convert those guys to a spread passing offense. But I've still got confidence and faith in the guy that he's going to get us back to where we need to get to."

Selected by the Patriots with the 21st selection of the 2006 NFL draft, four spots after the Vikings grabbed linebacker Chad Greenway, Barber said he "knew I had no chance" of ending up with the local NFL team, and not just because it had already signed Chester Taylor.

"I was hoping that I would because they see me a lot. They heard about me a lot," Maroney said. " … I was hoping that they were looking at me, but during the whole process I really didn’t hear anything about the Vikings so I really didn't think I would go there."

As for Brewster and the Gophers, Maroney said he's keeping his fingers crossed.

"Hopefully, next year they come out and get a good recruiting class and do a little better than we did this year," he said.

Moss speaks

Randy Moss spent a full hour at the podium during the Patriots' portion of Media Day and resisted an invitation to have a laugh on the Vikings or his other former team in Oakland.

"No, I'm not that type, man," he said. "I don't really get back at people like that. I think that whatever the past is or whatever happened in the past, I'm going to leave it there and the reason why is because I'm on a high pedestal just as far as being in the Super Bowl, the team coming to this game undefeated. Everything that's happened has been positive this year and I don't want to reflect on anything negative. I've never been that type. I think that's what really drives me and makes me stronger to go out there and make things happen."

When he was in Minnesota, Moss said he wanted to retire as a Viking, but with possible free agency looming, he isn't looking to go anywhere.

"As a New England Patriot, I would love to finish my career (here)," he said. "Just for the fact that they have everything that you want in a football organization. … For me to able to say that I would ... finish my career there, that's something that I can really, really believe in."

Attending the Super Bowl as a spectator, Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson said he is anxious to come back as a player and believes his team is capable of doing so in the very near future.

Peterson appeared with Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald at a press conference for Visa Financial Football, a program that teaches high school students to manage their financial futures through a multiple-choice, quiz-type game.

In a brief demonstration game, Peterson's Vikings team played Fitzgerald's Cardinals squad to a 7-7 tie.

Peterson's father, Nelson, said he and 25 family members will accompany the Vikings' rookie star to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii after Sunday's game between New England and the New York Giants.

Fitzgerald didn't predict a Super Bowl for the Cardinals, but he did say: "We're going to be in the playoffs next season. I guarantee that."

Busy week for Peterson

The Vikings didn't make it to the Super Bowl, but rookie running back Adrian Peterson has a full schedule here in Phoenix.

This afternoon, he will participate in a press conference for Financial Football, an instructional program that introduces high school-aged students to investment strategies.

Wednesday, Peterson will join Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Eagles running back Brian Westbrook for another media event to promote three new hamburgers for Chili's Bar and Grill.

Last but not least, Peterson is one of five finalists for this year's Diet Pepsi rookie of the year award, which will be announced Thursday.

Brady says he's playing

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady admits his right ankle is hurting, but he said it won't keep him from playing in Super Bowl XLII against the New York Giants.

"It's feeling good," Brady said after arriving in Phoenix. "I'll be ready to go."

Brady said he suffered the injury early in the third quarter of the Patriots' 21-12 AFC title-game win over San Diego and joked that it didn't affect his first interception.

"I wish I could blame that on the ankle," he said.

Asked if he expects to practice Wednesday, Brady said: "I don't know. It's a couple days away, but I'm feeling better."

Asked how much actual dropping and throwing he has done since the San Diego game, he admitted not much.

"I've done just a little bit," he said. "I've jogged around and I've shuffled and dropped and thrown the ball a little bit. Not enough as if I would have been practicing but enough that I know I'm going to play on Sunday."

Brady's ankle became the subject of a media circus last Monday when he was photographed walking the streets of New York in a protective boot.

On being pursued by the paparazzi, Brady said: "It was an interesting week. I'm much lighter on my toes than I thought."

He also said he was glad to be back "in the insulated halls of our locker room" and the protective custody of his offensive linemen.

"So don't any of you chase me around," he said. "I won't be nearly as nice as I was last week."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering former Vikings coach Dennis Green as a possible replacement.

Mortensen reported that Davis even has drafted a letter of resignation for Kiffin, who went 4-12 in his first season and so far has refused to sign.

Kiffin, a former Bloomington Jefferson High quarterback, has two years remaining on his Raiders contract.

Green, in a comment to ESPN, downplayed his potential candidacy.

"I haven't really talked to Al about any coaching job," he said, "but, really, how many times has my name been mentioned every time something goes on with the Raiders?"

Report: Falcons to hire Jags' Smith

ESPN is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons are expected to hire Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Smith as head coach, perhaps as soon as this afternoon.

According to the report, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was believed to be the team's second choice.

The Falcons reportedly were interested in New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo but were unwilling to wait to until after Super Bowl XLII to interview him.

Frazier also interviewed for the Miami Dolphins' head-coaching job, which went to Dallas Cowboys assistant Tony Sparano.

Vikings get 17th overall pick

The NFL issued an updated draft order. The Vikings will select 17th overall.

There were four teams with 8-8 records. But the Vikings strength of schedule was the second-easiest, at .504, behind the Arizona Cardinals (.434). The Houston Texand (.516) and the Philadelphia Eagles (.563) have the 18th and 19th picks, respectively.

The Vikings didn't do so bad the last time they had No. 17. In 2006, that pick landed them LB Chad Greenway, who just had a very solid season.

In the NFC North, the Chicago Bears pick 14th, with the Detroit Lions one spot behind them. The Green Bay Packers have the 30th pick.

Peterson lands deal with Chili's

The news was first reported by ESPN.com.

The Falcons have expanded their search, after the hire of new general manager Tom Dimitroff, who was a candidate for a position with the Vikings two years ago.

Frazier, who interviewed for the Miami Dolphins vacancy, finished his first season with the Vikings.

The Falcons have interviewed seven candidates, ESPN said.

With two more jobs filling up, the only vacancies are with the Falcons and the Washington Redskins.

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy denied internet reports that he has stepped down.

Dungy told ESPN that he will talk with his wife and make a decision this weekend.

"Believe it or not, I'm going to go through the process just like I said I would," Dungy told ESPN. "(Owner) Jim Irsay and I, along with (team president) Bill Polian, have have been talking about this for the last couple of days in Indianapolis. Jim wants me to open the new stadium. I'm not opposed to it, my wife it not opposed to it. I'm going to go through this process to make sure that I should do it."

Dungy said Irsay will be the first to know of his decision on Monday.

"Nobody else will know about it before Jim," he told ESPN.

Dolphins hire Sparano

The Miami Dolphins have hired Dallas Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano to be their head coach, according to FOXSports.com.

Dolphins officials contacted the other candidates to inform them of their decision, FOXSports reported.

That rules out Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who interviewed for the vacancy. As of now, he has not emerged as a candidate for the openings with the Washington Redskins or the Atlanta Falcons.

He could, however, become a player in Indianapolis, if Colts head coach Tony Dungy retires.

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was flattered and "honored" to interview for the Miami Dolphins head-coaching job, but he has no qualms about remaining in Minnesota.

As he discussed ways to improve his defense in 2008, Frazier said he got a "sudden" phone call from the Dolphins.

"I was pleased about that phone call," he said Friday. "But, at the same time, I was torn because I want us to be playing in that postseason next year."

Frazier then rattled off a number of the positives from this season, from his defense allowing few points to the emergence of middle linebacker E.J. Henderson.

"It really gets you pumped up about the future. And if we tighten up some things, I think we’re really close to something special," he said. "I really do believe that."

Frazier said Dolphin officials have confirmed what he thought: that he had a strong interview with owner Wayne Huizenga, president Bryan Wiedmeier and Bill Parcells, the new vice president of football operations.

Asked if he was concerned about the Dolphins interviewing him to fulfill the NFL's Rooney Rule, Frazier said, "I didn’t approach it from that point of view.

"I looked at it as a great opportunity for me. I prepared, and I felt like the interview was a legitimate interview. I felt like they were giving me a shot at the job."

Frazier, though, insisted he is happy that the Rooney Rule exists, and added, "I think it makes a difference."

Frazier said he is not sure of the timetable. But he's got plenty of work to do at Winter Park.

"Believe me, I ain’t losing any sleep about that job," Frazier said. "I’ve got a great job here, and I’m excited about the future here. It would be great if that opportunity (comes).

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier provided The Miami Herald a positive spin on his interview with the Miami Dolphins.

"I think I did very well,'' Frazier told The Miami Herald. "You have to talk to Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland to see their thoughts on that. They're the ones you should talk to, but I was happy with how I did.

"I was honest and forthright. That's all you can do in that situation. Like I said, I think I did well."

That's not a surprise; Frazier is about as honest as they come.

But the Dolphins are moving forward, with the Herald reporting that Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan was up next. Also, Dallas Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano interviewed for the job over the weekend and is considered the favorite for the job.

There have been questions about the legitimacy of his interview, because he is African American and the NFL mandates teams interview a minority candidate before hiring a head coach. But Frazier didn't see any problem with his interview.

''I think [the rule] was respected,'' Frazier said. "Having myself in, and I don't know who the other candidates are, but them giving me the opportunity to sit down and talk about the job shows that they respect it. We'll just have to see what happens from there.''

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to speak to Miami Dolphin officials tonight and tomorrow about their vacant head coaching job. But there continues to be alarming stories related to the Dolphins.

According to The Miami Herald, the Dolphins have already hired David Lee as the quarterbacks coach. That's a fairly significant position. So why would the Dolphins do that? Perhaps because they already have picked out their head coach.

Sadly, by interviewing Frazier, the Dolphins would fulfill the Rooney Rule, which requires a team interview a minority candidate before hiring a head coach.

This is a difficult issue, since the spirit of the rule is to promote equity. But, in reality, some good people like Frazier could be dragged through a pointless interview.

If that proves to be the case, the league needs to revisit this whole rule -- or start punishing the teams that make a mockery of it.

Vikings sign a Saluki WR

The Vikings signed Southern Illinois WR Brent Little on Friday.

Little went undrafted and attended training camp with the Cleveland Browns.

Little is 6-foot, and he runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds.

A four-year starter, he caught 124 passes for 2,303 yards and 20 touchdowns at Southern Illinois.

Here is what a Sports Illustrated draft preview said of him:

POSITIVES: Solid small-school receiver with marginal NFL potential. Comes back to the ball out of breaks, offers the quarterback a nice target and displays good eye/hand coordination. Runs well laterally making the reception in stride and uses his body to shield away opponents.

NEGATIVES: Not quick releasing off the line, lacks a second gear and home run-hitting speed. Good size, yet seems to have difficulties in battles.

Woods to remain with the Vikings

Woods just wrapped up his second season with the Vikings, and the pass defense was ranked last in the NFL. But Woods was key in developing rookie cornerback Marcus McCauley, who had to fill in for injured veteran Antoine Winfield.

USA Today announces Vikings MVP

Interesting pick by USA Today, for the Vikings' MVP.

The paper named an MVP on every team, and the Vikings' winner was G Steve Hutchinson. Here is the paper's justification: "Yes, Adrian Peterson had a stellar rookie season. But Hutchinson is the best player on arguably the NFL's best offensive line. He paved the way for 16 games against nine- and 10-man fronts as the Vikings finished as the league's top rushing team. Peterson missed 2½ games and disappeared down the stretch."

While the Vikings do have an outstanding offensive line, I'm fairly certain this is not the best unit in the entire league. RT Ryan Cook still looked shaky at key stretches and on key plays (safety against the Denver Broncos). The Vikings O-line was outstanding against the run, but struggled to protect the quarterback in several games. The offensive line in New England isn't too shabby, and neither are the ones in San Diego, Jacksonville, Dallas and Green Bay, just to name a few.

Frazier to interview for Dolphins job

Vikings coach Brad Childress indicated during his season-ending press conference that he had given two NFL teams permission to speak to his assistants, although he declined to provide more specifics.

''I'm just looking forward to sitting down and talking to Bill (Parcells) and Jeff (Ireland) and the owner to get a feel what they're looking for in a headcoach,'" Frazier told The Miami Herald.

Vikings coach Brad Childress didn't exactly give quarterback Tarvaris Jackson a vote of confidence, at least not publicly.

"That process is still ongoing," Childress said of Jackson's evaluation. "...But I was able to talk to Tarvaris this morning, and have a great eye-to-eye with him. Kevin (Rogers) spoke with him yesterday. I thought he continued to make progress, as we went through, and hopefully that’s a things to come picture of what you saw there in the last five minutes, playing wide open and cutting loose with it and making plays with his arm and his feet."

Asked if he would be comfortable with Jackson as his starter in 2008, Childress said, "You know, I don’t know that it’s ever good to get comfortable.

"But I’m glad that I saw progress from him – positive progress from him – and he has a lot of things that they collectively and individually need to improve on," Childress said. "So We’ll see if those things come to fruition as we keep moving."

Childress also said he expected Kelly Holcomb and Brooks Bollinger back, although he tempered that by saying, "good football players are what we’re all about, and I haven’t even started to assess the draft or free agency yet, and see what’s out there.

"So this is a fluid situation."

Finally, regarding Jackson, Childress was asked if he hasn't said anything more definitive about his quarterback to motivate him.

"Yeah, I’m not interested in trying to motivate him by leaving a cloud of doubt," Childress said. "He knows exactly how I feel about him. And, again, those are conversations that are between coach and quarterback."

Childress, though, insisted that improving the passing offense and improving the passing defense are the offseason priorities.

Other highlights:

* Childress said the Wilfs have given him full support in pursuing free agents this offseason.

"If we deem it necessary, money is not an issue," Childress said. "We just want to make sure that you’re smart, on how you’re spending your money, and who you bring into the mix."

* Still, Childress said building the team through the draft is the priority.

* Childress said he has given two teams permission to speak to his assistants. The Baltimore Ravens, the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins all have openings.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier would appear the most likely candidate.

* CB Antoine Winfield, DT Pat Williams, WR Bobby Wade, DE Jayme Mitchell and LT Bryant McKinnie all will have some sort of procedure during the offseason.

* Regarding WR Troy Williamson, "One thing I have to say about Troy is, Troy worked extremely hard this offseason to try to better himself.

"He tried different things. We tried different things to improve. He’s still under contract to the Minnesota Vikings, and he’s a part of those ongoing discussions that we’ll have next week when we talk about the receiver position."

Adrian Peterson, who finished second in rushing yards as a rookie this season, was the overwhelming winner of The Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Peterson got 461/2 votes Wednesday from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas was the only other player receiving votes, 31/2.

"I added to things they already had," Peterson said, according to the Associated Press. "I am a playmaker. That's why I say if there is anything I could do to put me out there, just put me out there.

"I wanted to come in and be a difference and help the team turn around. I came with the attitude to do whatever I had to do to get on the field."

Vikings coach Brad Childress told the Associated Press that he could tell Peterson was special .

"From an early time, a week after the draft when we had about 50 free agents in here, you knew he was going to be a special guy," Childress said.

Last year's winner was Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young.

Edwards suspension lifted

Peter King of Sports Illustrated named DT Pat Williams and LB E.J. Henderson to his All-Pro teams.
But King did not give one of his two spots at running back to rookie Adrian Peterson (they went to LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook). More surprisingly, though, King named Cleveland Browns OT Joe Thomas offensive rookie of the year.

This is how he justified that decision: "No disrespect to Adrian Peterson, but for 16 games, Thomas was more impactful on the Browns than Peterson was on Minnesota."

Vikings final rankings

The final numbers are in, and the Vikings are No. 1 running the ball and defending the run. That's the good news.

The bad news: They finished 28th throwing the ball and last at defending the pass.

Overall, the offense was 13th and the defense was 20th. Based on what I saw this season, though, those rankings should be flipped.

Where the Vikings rank in some other key areas:

* The Vikings' offense was 27th in third-down conversions

* The Vikings' defense was 18th in third-down conversions

* The Vikings tied for ninth with 31 takeaways and tied for 12th with 30 giveaways. Their plus-one net difference was tied for 13th in the NFL.

* Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was 28th in the NFL, and his completion percentage was 26th, which isn't good enough for a team that runs the West Coast offense. Also discouraging is the fact that he is 30th in interceptions per pass attempt.

* Jackson was 19th in fourth-quarter passing (83.4) but he was not among the top 25 on third downs.

* Adrian Peterson finished second in rushing, sixth in touchdowns and fourth in yards from scrimmage. But one discouraging stat was his third-and-conversion rate. He was just six of nine, tied for 32nd in the NFL. Veteran Chester Taylor was four of five.

* Kicker Ryan Longwell was tied for 14th with nine touchbacks on kickoffs

* Chris Kluwe was eighth in yards per punt, and 16th in net average.

* Aundrae Allison led the NFC with a 28.7 average on kickoffs, and was third in the NFL.

* No Viking was among the top 50 for sacks in the NFL.

Peterson to return kicks?

Apparently, the Vikings aren't holding back for today's game. It appears RB Adrian Peterson may handle some or all of the Vikings' kickoffs today, something he hasn't done since Oct. 28, against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It is worth nothing, though, that WR Aundrae Allison, who has handled kickoffs the last four games, is also active and available.

Peterson among team MVPs

Running back Adrian Peterson was named the Vikings' most valuable offensive player today in a vote of his teammates and coaches.

Middle linebacker E.J. Henderson was voted defensive MVP and linebacker Heath Farwell took home special teams honors.

Peterson has rushed for a team-leading 1,305 yards heading into Sunday's regular-season finale at Denver.

Henderson leads the defense in tackles with 138 and Farwell has registered a team-high 30 special-teams tackles.

Williams: 'I'm playing'

The Vikings are listing defensive tackle Pat Williams as questionable for Sunday's regular-season finale at Denver, but Williams said there's no doubt.

"I'm playing," he said.

Williams returned to practice after getting Wednesday and Thursday off to rest knee and elbow injuries.

Wide receiver Sidney Rice (ankle) said he also should be good to go, but cornerback Antoine Winfield (shoulder) will be a game-time decision again this week.

Both are listed as questionable, as is linebacker Dontarrious Thomas (groin).

Linebacker Vinny Ciurciu (ankle) is doubtful and not expected to play, while wide receiver Bobby Wade (knee) and linebacker David Herron (concussion) are probable.

Vikings played into Redskins' hand

Interesting article in the Washington Post today.

In it, In developing his scheme for the Vikings, Washington Redskins assistant head coach (defense) Gregg Williams unveiled a unique game plan that often included five linemen or four linebackers.

Vikings coach Brad Childress lamented that his team stuck with the run too long, a point Williams backed up.

The Vikings "cooperated on what they played," Williams told the Post.

"They played the packages that allowed us to play a couple of new packages... I thought our defensive line and our linebackers and our safeties did a really good job on not giving [them] a chance to get their running game started," Williams said. "We didn't allow the space they wanted to have those great backs cut back on us, be able to juke us in the open field. We made the young quarterback have to beat us."

Of course, that didn't happen, with Tarvaris Jackson struggling. The Vikings can expect more of the same in Denver on Sunday.

Practice update

Vikings coach Brad Childress gave Pat Williams a second consecutive day off, but he is still hopeful that his Pro Bowl defensive tackle will play in the season finale Sunday.

Williams indicated on Wednesday that he would be fine to play on Sunday. Interestingly, in addition to the knee, his elbow was added to the injury report Thursday.

"Give him some time," Childress said of Williams. "He’s got multiple nicks and knacks, from playing on the defensive line, and he doesn’t need to be out here on his feet. He can do more inside (in the training room)."

LB Vinny Ciurciu also did not practice, with an ankle sprain, and WR Bobby Wade was given the day off. Despite multiple minor injuries, Wade hasn't missed a game this season.

Meanwhile, Childress declined to talk about Darrion Scott's marijuana citation in West Virginia, where he is from. Home for the Christmas break, Scott received a misdemeanor for possessing marijuana in his car.

Asked if he was disappointed, Childress said, "I wouldn’t characterize it any way, until I get a chance to speak to him."

Winfield hopeful

Wearing a brace to protect his injured left shoulder, cornerback Antoine Winfield practiced on a limited basis today and said he hopes to play in Sunday's regular-season finale at Denver.

Winfield said he has a limited range of motion with the brace and that the shoulder is still a little stiff but feels a lot better than it did last week.

Winfield said he wanted to play in Sunday night's 32-21 loss to Washington but didn't disagree with the decision to hold him out.

"I don't think I could really hit anything," he said. "It would be hard for me, playing my style of football, to go out and tackle someone."

Asked if he can get to that point by Sunday, he said:"Hopefully, I can. That's what I'm hoping for."

Practice notes:Defensive tackle Pat Williams and linebacker Vinny Ciurciu were the only players who didn't participate in practice.

Ciurciu has an ankle injury and the Vikings said Williams was given the day off.

Coach Brad Childress said he isn't ruling cornerback Antoine Winfield or any of his injured players out for Sunday's regular-season finale at Denver.

Winfield and wide receiver Sidney Rice were held out of Sunday night's 32-21 loss to Washington because of an injured left shoulder and right ankle, respectively.

Rice said he's optimistic he can return and Childress didn't dismiss the possibility of Winfield playing a limited role, even if he's not healthy enough to start.

"The thing that we always kind of stand by is, is this guy going to be able to protect himself?" Childress said. "Antoine wanted to play last week and we kind of held him back, but he's made very good progress."

The Vikings need a win Sunday and a Washington loss to Dallas to make the playoffs, but Childress said he doesn't want his players doing any scoreboard-watching.

"I just think it's important for us at this point to pour all of our energies into the Denver Broncos and forget the what-if game," he said. "For us, it's down to one game. All we can do is control what we can do. We've got nothing to do with the Dallas-Washington game."

Redskins did not sub out players, Childress said

Vikings coach Brad Childress clarified that the Washington Redskins did not sub out a player on a key play during the fourth quarter.

Childress initially thought the Redskins changed personnel before quick-snapping the ball so his team could not challenge a 23-yard catch by Santana Moss. But, other than one receiver he cannot identify, Childress said the Redskins did not change the fullback and tight end, only lining them up in a spread formation.

Childress spoke to Mike Perreira, the NFL's vice president of officiating, after Sunday night's game, as well as Monday morning. But both were trying to get their hands on a different tape to provide them another perspective.

Here are other highlights from his press conference:

* Asked about the Dallas Cowboys potentially resting players Sunday against the Washington Redskins, Childress said, "That’s the nature of the business.

"We’ve done it before (in Philadelphia), when you have nothing to gain in terms of positioning," he said. "You kind of weigh where you’re going to be freshness wise and sharpness wise."

* Childress said he has not finished his evaluation of quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. But he mentioned that he wants the quarterback to limit his turnovers and make more of the routine throws.

* Childress said rookie Adrian Peterson got limited playing time in the second half, because Chester Taylor is more experienced with pass protection.

Two Bears players were fined by the NFL for penalties in Monday night's 20-13 loss to the Vikings.

Linebacker Lance Briggs was fined $5,000 for a roughing-the-passer penalty on quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

Cornerback Charles Tillman was fined $7,500 for a horse-collar tackle.

With Willie Parker losing a yard on his only carry Thursday night, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson now only trails the Pittsburgh Steelers running back by 38 yards. Unfortunately, Parker broke his leg on the run and is sidelined for the rest of this season.

But if Peterson wants to win the rushing title, he still has to contend with San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson, who is second with 1,311 rushing yards. Peterson is third in the league with 1,278 rushing yards.

In the spirit of the holidays, the Vikings' players decided to donate their fine money from the season to the Salvation Army.

"We just thought it would be a good thing to do with our fine monies," coach Brad Childress said. "Because they're not my fine monies or the Vikings. It's really (the players) that have donated. You know, they may not have wanted to."

Asked how much money was involved, Childress said: "I can just tell you that it's a lot different than the number that (Oakland Raiders coach) Billy Callahan fined his guys the year they went to the Super Bowl. He fined them $750,000. Ours is very pale (by comparison)."

Coach Brad Childress said he's still in a fact-gathering stage regarding safety Dwight Smith, who was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and obstructing traffic last Thursday in downtown Minneapolis.

Asked if Smith's reported admission to police that he had smoked marijuana is a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy, Childress said: "Well, it would be if that was the case. I haven't seen that to be the case. Like I said, I just need to let that part take care of itself."

According to the police report, Smith admitted he had "just got done smoking some marijuana" at the time he was cited.

Childress said he would let the legal process play out and wait until he has all the facts before making any decision on possible team discipline.

Adrian Peterson: “This is a great honor as a rookie and I’m proud to be selected. More important than that is that some of the guys who made it possible for me to go are also going, like Hutch, Birk and Tony. This was one of my goals coming into the season and it feels good to accomplish that. I’m blessed by the individual honor, but I know we have some team goals we are still striving for.”

Pat Williams: “I want to thank all the fans that voted for me and my teammates. It’s a blessing to be voted in outright and it’s nice to know that all the hard work over the years has paid off. I appreciate being recognized by the other players in the league, it means a lot to me.”

Darren Sharper: “I think the number of guys we had make the Pro Bowl is a reflection of the team as a whole. We are on a hot streak right now and we’re being recognized for our success. It’s a good representation of how the team is playing overall that people are paying attention. When you get to the stage of your career that I’m at, you don’t know how many more of these honors are going to come your way, so you really appreciate it more. It will be nice to bring my parents and my brother out there and let them enjoy the whole atmosphere.”

Tony Richardson: “Something like this is a credit to all the good people you have around you. It takes everyone doing their job for anyone to get recognition. Without a great line in front of you and some great running backs behind you, you’re nothing. I’m blessed to be surrounded by good people and Eric Bieniemy deserves a lot of credit. It’s not very often two guys from a backfield are going be Pro Bowlers. It’s humbling for me to know that the Vikings took a chance on me two years ago and that I was able to make the most of the chance they gave me.”

Pro Bowls are great but we want to keep improving on defense and winning games. This says a lot about our defense overall and the other guys around us played a huge part in our getting selected.”

Childress said their status is "uncertain" for Sunday's key game against the Washington Redskins. But, given a short week, both may be in danger of missing the game.

Vikings keep moving up

The Vikings offense was sloppy on Monday night, but moved up two spots to No. 11. A dominant defensive performance helped the Vikings move up to No. 20, although they remain last against the pass.

On offense, the Vikings clearly took a step backwards, with Tarvaris Jackson looking as skittish as he had earlier this season. He made two terrible throws that, at this point in the season, are inexcusable. The Chicago Bears didn't blitz cornerbacks, like the San Francisco 49ers did, but brought everyone else to bottle up Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson. Jackson wasn't able to capitalize, and his mistakes would have been far more costly against most other teams.

For the Bears to manage just 10 points off Minnesota's four turnovers is an apparent reflection of how far their offense has fallen since last season.

Robert Ferguson will start in place of Williamson, who had been suffering headaches since suffering a concussion against the New York Giants but was cleared to play this week.

The Vikings announced no changes to their starting defense, which presumably means Dwight Smith will open at safety, despite being cited Thursday for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Smith expected to play

Coach Brad Childress said he will wait until all the facts are in before deciding on any possible team discipline for safety Dwight Smith, who was cited Thursday for misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

But the incident apparently won't keep him out of Monday night's game against Chicago.

"Right now, I anticipate him playing," Childress said after today's practice.

Smith participated in the practice session but wasn't in the locker room during the open media period.

Childress said he has spoken to Smith about the incident but declined to discuss any details.

"Those are conversations I would keep between Dwight and I," he said.

Childress likewise declined to speculate on any possible NFL discipline for Smith but said he doesn't think the incident will be a distraction for the team.

"I think we were able to put it behind us yesterday," he said. "We talked about it yesterday and put it where it needs to be and got ourselves back down to business."

Defensive tackle Pat Williams, who was with Smith at the time he was cited, said the players remain focused.

"Ain't nothing happened," Williams said. "That's just people trying to get in our locker room. We're not worried about that. Our focus is on the Chicago Bears and the game in front of us."

Childress said it was unfortunate that Williams was prominently mentioned in some TV reports of the incident, adding, "Pat was a sidebar to that. He had nothing to do with anything."

According to the police report, Smith admitted to having smoked marijuana, but Childress wouldn't speculate on how that might impact possible NFL discipline.

"Until the legal process runs its course, I wouldn't know," Childress said.

Guest speaker: Thee Vikings got a post-practice pep talk from former Wichita State coach Willie “Jeff” Jeffries, the father-in-law of tight ends coach Jimmie Johnson.

His message to the players?

"I just talked to them about life and living and their habits off the field," he said. "They had seven pro quarterbacks in a room and they were asking them what was the most important quarter in a game. … And Gino Torretta told them the fifth quarter is the most important quarter. That's what you do from the end of the game until Monday when you come back."
