Smoot, Griffin headed for IR... and Childress on Robinson
Vikings backup cornerback Fred Smoot broke his jaw in five places and needed surgery after he was involved in a single-car accident Friday in Mississippi, coach Brad Childress said. He will be placed on injured reserve, as will starting cornerback Cedric Griffin, who has a neck injury.
"That thing won't respond fast enough, and we don't want to put him in peril," Childress said of Griffin.
As for Smoot, Childress said "details are sketchy," although he has exchanged text messages with the veteran cornerback.
Undrafted rookie Charles Gordon would appear in line to start.
Meanwhile, the Vikings promoted DE Khreem Smith was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. They also claimed Michael Hawkins, a second-year defensive back out of Oklahoma, off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.
They also signed Dimitri Patterson, a defensive back out of Tuskegee, to the practice squad.
Here is what Childress said about Marcus Robinson:
"I spent as much time talking to Marcus Robinson as any member of our football team. And maybe twice as much time, talking to Marcus. I wish him the best as he goes on. It's just a matter of getting someone that I feel like has a chance to possibly impact this thing in the future."
Asked why he didn't think Robinson could make an impact, Childress said, "It's what just what you see. It's what you put on the field, put it on tape every day."
Told that Robinson led the team in touchdowns, Childress said, "Yeah, he did lead the team in touchdowns.
"I can't deny that. I'm well aware of his statistics. I'm well aware of how he has gotten open, whether it's by himself or by the system as well."
On Robinson talking to the Pioneer Press: "He's always been a talkative guy.
"That's just his nature. He vents like other people vent. That's his business."
Asked if that played a role in his release, Childress said, "Not in my mind."

Does Childress remind you of any other prominent U.S. leader?
Blind faith in a "plan" without any ability to compromise or adjust?
Values "loyalty" in his underlings above everything else?
Cannot see when their plan is inherently flawed and veiws there to be no choice but to "see it through to the end" no matter haw many people get hurt?
When the plan is clearly failing, blame "execution of the plan" not the plan itself?
Appoints only those who he has had personal dealings with to positions of power?
Had zero real world experience as a leader before taking over the reins?
Removes any person with independent thinkiing skills or a contradictory voice regardless of obvious skill set?
Childress is a disaster and needs to be let go now... His ego will destroy the Vikings franchise.
A prediction for your consideration: For every year Childress is leading the team, it will take two years to become competitive again after he leaves. If he lasts 3 years we are in for at least 6 long years of struggles/rebuilding. End it now. Please.
We live in a time where we demand instant gratification and immediate results. It seems as though there is no longer any patience in pro sports anymore. A recent example is the Steve Spurrier fiasco. A head coach, any head coach, must be given time to instill his mark on a team. Remember that Bill Belichick went 5-11 in his first year with the Patriots, and then won his first of three superbowls the following year. Brad Childress has not had a great year by any means, and some of his decisions demand explanation, but to judge his performance on one year is unfair. And comparing this team to Tice's of last year is uncalled for. He had a better record yes, but remember that was not his first year as head coach, he had a chance to improve on his own system. That is the very definition of "rebuilding" and it is exactly what we are doing right now. Now maybe Childress will turn out to be a bust, but we have to give him one more year to see what he can do with this talent. Sometimes doing things the right way takes a little longer, and from the outside looking in can seem like it doesn't make sense, but I plan on being a Vikings fan for a very long time, not just till the end of this season.
Yes, I agree, Childress is a disaster. I hope Zygi uses the same judgement to fire Childress as Childress claims to have used to cut Marcus Robinson, "Lack of Skill."
balzonia was rigth on the money. A leader in any arena looks at and is critical of even his own performance, takes information from his advisors, litsens to the desire of it's "customers/fans" and crew/team - then makes a thougthful decision. Unwillingness to admit error or adjust direction gets you in trouble. Our old OC Linehan in St.Louis seems to have taken on the lesson and won the last 3/5 after hittgin the mid-season skids. Now if old Chilli would just wake upa dn smell the coffee.
balzonia was right on the money. Chilli seems paranoid and afraid to admit early error and make adjsutments yo get abck on a einning track. Even the weak wins over AZ and Det(?) - really; those are teams the Vikes shoudl ahev DOMINATED and tehn given teh game over to Tavaris in the 4th quarter to get some experience. Chilli's paranoia makes me miss Tice and a capable offense.

What?? This was an unbelievable statement. If it was the system, why weren't the other receivers getting open? Why when Robinson was out did we not see other receivers scoring touchdowns? Why was it that when Robinson was running Williamson's routes he was making big plays, while Williamson himself was not?
If you are going to cut a WR's for lack of skill, then there should have been some other guys at the front of that line. Secondly, why do it on Christmas Eve? That seemed rather spiteful. I hope the criticism that Childress is receiving right now teaches him a lesson on how to handle the team. Leave the ego at home, and make decisions based on what's best for the FOOTBALL TEAM!
