Ferguson signing close?
The Vikings' young wide receiver corps could be about to get a large shot of experience.
Agent Brian Overstreet said early this morning that he would be in town today for contract talks on wide receiver Robert Ferguson, who visited Winter Park on Sunday after being released by the Green Bay Packers last week.
Ferguson spent Monday in Houston meeting with the Texans, but Overstreet indicated that the Vikings are his first choice.
Ferguson, 27, caught 116 passes for 1,577 yards and 12 touchdowns in six seasons with the Packers after joining the team as a second-round draft choice.
The former Texas A&M star has been dogged by injuries throughout his NFL career, including a foot sprain that cost him 12 games last season, but the Vikings put Ferguson through a physical examination Sunday in addition to working him out and obviously were satisfied with the results.
He could have an immediate impact as the third wide receiver for the Vikings, who have little experience behind starters Bobby Wade and Troy Williamson.

I'm not criticizing Don here, because Wade does have actual NFL experience, but Wade's experience is being cut from teams that are crying for WR help.
Someone, anyone, should be added to try and make the best of a slapshod receiving corps.
Ferguson would be a BIG plus for our Vikes. We need someone like him with a lot of experience. Wade does drop the ball a lot. The lattest was last week i NY.....3rd and 6 that would've been a 1st down. I hope we get'em....
The addition of Ferguson would be an addition of fatigue. I have been refering to him as the dumbest WR in football for years. He sat on the practice squad his first year after being a 2nd round draft choice because he couldn't learn the plays. He was inconsistent at best. There has to be better out there.
That one drop notwithstanding, I like what I've seen of Bobby Wade this summer.
If healthy, I also think Robert Ferguson is an upgrade on the Vikings' backup receivers, which is not to say they shouldn't keep looking in case someone better becomes available.
I'm not in Minnesota, much less am I watching practice everyday. If Don likes what he sees, I can't disagree with that. It wouldn't be unheard of for Wade to get his stuff together at this point in his career, but it's not as though he was replaced by Jerry Rice or Don Hutson in Chicago, Atlanta and Tennessee.
I'm no fan of the Childress regime, but this signing and his comments seem to indicate that he realizes the WR corps is awful and will keep bringing in new bodies until someone produces. Of course, the time to do that would have been in March. . .
