Gaines Adams scheduled for pre-draft visit

DE Gaines Adams, a projected top 10 pick, is one of the incoming rookies the Vikings have invited for a pre-draft visit, according to Scout.com.

Adams is considered the best available defensive end in this draft.

You are right, any NFL QB can pick a part a secondary when there is zero pass rush.

If CJ or Adams are gone at 7, trade down to grab Meachem/Bowe and gain more picks.

The big question mark in this equation is how Erasmus will play this year coming back from his injury. It seems crazy how many ends we've had to take the last few years in the first round, especially if we have to do it again. I wouldn't complain one bit with Adams, and we could do worse than Anderson. I'd still rather trade down and get a few more picks and take a DE in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Personally, I think defensive line is by far the smallest need on the team. I also don't see replacing Udeze or James by a rookie will be anything other than a step back for the team. Udeze and James were both as highly touted as any defensive end in this draft, if not more so. The Vikings are essentially getting a high first round pick at the pass rushing right end with James coming back.

Udeze led the team in QB hurries last year while playing out of position. I believe Udeze will get sacks from the left end and I don't think James should be given up on because of an injury early in his career. In my opinion, using the seventh pick on Adams or Anderson would be a mistake.

In addition, I don't put the lack of pass rush last year on the defensive ends. The scheme that Tomlin used was all about having the defensive lineman stay at home, don't get up the field, and dominate versus the run, which they did. Tomlin tried to get most of his rush from his linebackers, and after Harris got hurt, that rush became much weaker. It looks like the new defensive game plan will be more geared towards pass rush and will sacrifice the run defense a bit. We will see which strategy brings a stronger defense. Remember, the Vikings had there best defense in a decade last year.

I just don't think the seventh pick in the draft is the right place to address depth, that can be done later in the draft, and this draft is deep. We need starter quality players at too many other positions (WR, TE, QB, RT, and S) to worry about DE depth in the first round.

You sure could be right cronn. I don't think Udeze needs replaced, but I think a lot of people agree with your line of thinking.

Same to you cronn. It is nice to see adult discussion about the Vikes from people who seem to pay attention and have thoughtful opinions.
