Lelie to 49ers

So much for Ashley Lelie's Monday visit to Winter Park. Lelie signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers that maxes out at $6 million. He will make $3.2 million in the first year.
I guess the Vikings weren't willing to pay that much... or Lelie really, really wanted to go to San Francisco.

We didn't really need him anyway. Don't get me wrong: he's good, but he's just like Troy. We don't need two burners with questionable hands. We need to fix Troy, put him in the Reggie Wayne slot, and get a 1st and slot receiver. I don't like the free agent WR class, but I like Gonzalez in 2nd or 3rd round of the draft as our new slot guy.

Barring a trade up to draft Calvin Johnson (which I am all for) I don't see the Vikings taking a WR until the 2nd or 3rd round as well . . . Would love it if Robert Meachem were avilable in round 2 but it's more likely that the Vikes will choose between folks like Anthony Gonzalez, Jason Hill, Craig Davis, Aundrae Allison and maybe David Clowney in the first day.

None of these folks are going to be instant #1 WRs so it begs the question who on our roster (or still in free agency) could we possibly acquire to fill that role and line up against the DeAngelo Halls and Champ Baileys of the world . . .

With Lelie and Bennett spoken for, it leaves

Joe Horn
Donte Stallworth
Kevin Curtis
Antonio Bryant

as the most obvious selections. Now Curtis leaves town without a contract and may be content being the slot guy in Detroit (as opposed to an almost guaranteed #2 spot here) so we're looking at an old guy, a guy coming off an injury, and a guy with "character concerns" to pair with a rookie and or/ Troy Williamson in our starting lineup . . .

I'm starting to think if they don't trade up for Johnson and Gaines Adams gets picked at #5 or #6 then the Vikings should trade down into the #10 - #20 spot and take a receiver like Dwayne Jarrett, Sidney Rice, Dwayne Bowe, or TE Greg Olsen.

I know it's not the strongest draft for TEs but I'd be thrilled if they at least picked up Ben Patrick or Scott Chandler in the 3rd round (providing they're still available) . . . Shiancoe doesn't inspire a great amount of confidence in me -- but I hope to be proved wrong.

Now there's speculation that the Rams may cut Isaac Bruce . . . wouldn't mind seeing him in purple to be honest but I doubt the Rams are in that much salary cap trouble that it'll be an issue.

Sean, which WRs do you like in this draft (that the Vikes have a resonable chance of drafting?)

Also, any guess why Logan Payne (who I thought had a fine senior season at the U) widely not considered as even a 7th round pick by almost every major NFL draft prognosticator?
